How is a quality system assured?

By external audit

By an internal reporting and auditing system

Assuring a quality system comes from within the organization through a formal internal reporting and auditing framework. Regular internal audits check that procedures are actually followed, data are accurate, and processes meet defined quality standards. When issues are found, formal reports trigger corrective and preventive actions, with steps to verify that those actions fix the cause and don’t cause new problems. This ongoing cycle—identify problems, investigate, implement improvements, verify effectiveness, and review by management—keeps the quality system active and improving.

External audits, financial audits, or manufacturer certification can be valuable, but they don’t provide the day-to-day assurance of the system’s effectiveness the way internal reporting and auditing do.
